Benthic Metabolism in Fluvial Sediments with Larvae of Lampetra sp.

چکیده

Lampreys spend their larval stage within fine sand fluvial sediments, where they burrow and act as filter feeders. Lamprey larvae (ammocoetes) can significantly affect benthic-pelagic coupling nutrient cycling in rivers, due to high densities. However, bioturbation, feeding excretion activities are still poorly explored. These aspects were investigated by means of laboratory incubations intact sediments added with ammocoetes animals alone. Oxygen respiration, fluxes rates determined. Individual ammocoete suggested that biomass-specific oxygen consumption ammonium, reactive phosphorus silica size-dependent, greater small compared large individuals. The comparison metabolic measured revealed activity decreases when burrowed sediments. Furthermore, results suggest a major fraction ammonium excreted was assimilated benthic microbes or microalgae overcome situ N-limitation. Alternatively, part the oxidized denitrified nitrate uptake rather increased along density. Ammocoetes but such production not apparent bioturbated likely microbial microalgal immobilization

Erosion of biofilm-bound fluvial sediments

The movement of fluvial sediment shapes our rivers. Understanding sediment entrainment has been a goal of hydraulic engineers for almost a century1,2. Previous sediment entrainment models have been informed by laboratory experiments using grains that were free from biological material3. In natural river settings, however, sediments are invariably covered by bacteria, often forming visible biofi...

Benthic primary production and nutrient cycling in sediments with benthic microalgae and transient accumulation of macroalgae

Annual rates of sediment denitrification and sediment–water fluxes of oxygen and nutrients were quantified at two shallow locations, Virksund and Ulbjerg, in the Limfjorden, Denmark. The sediment was sandy and colonized mainly by bivalves with a wet weight of 2,508 g m22 at Virksund and 572 g m22 at Ulbjerg. A benthic microalgal community was present throughout the year, and for 1–2 months in t...

Constraints in cropping heavy-metal contaminated fluvial sediments.

Growth and heavy-metal uptake of various food crops and grass cultivated on harbour dredge spoils were studied, and health aspects in consuming the marketable products were discussed. Vegetables (potato, carrot, radish, endive, lettuce) and grass (English ryegrass) performed well on dredge spoils, but small grains (wheat, barley) were affected by manganese deficiency. As compared with crops gro...
